How this Kanoodle solver works, and why backtracking is the point

The solver's job is easy to state: read the pieces a challenge card pre-places, then fill every remaining hole on the 5×11 board with the rest of the twelve pieces, no gaps and no overlap. Each Kanoodle piece is a fixed little cluster of holes, and the solver generates every rotation and reflection of each one. Writing that code exposes the structure of the game, because a piece that seems to have one shape actually has five or six legal forms once you account for rotations and reflections.

Then it backtracks. Place a piece, check whether the remaining holes can still be covered, and the instant they cannot, pull the piece back out and try the next orientation. The program quits on dead placements in milliseconds, where a human solver can cling to a doomed arrangement far longer.

The search is also exhaustive, which is what makes it trustworthy as a checker. If a card is solvable, the solver finds a placement. If a card is genuinely impossible, it exhausts the search and says so instead of guessing. It clears every valid card, including ones that resist manual solving.

Perimeter neglect came second. Filling the middle feels productive, and then the boundary turns out to be uncoverable. Corner and edge holes can only be covered by pieces that sit flush against them, so lock the perimeter early and let the flexible small pieces clean up the interior.
